I know I shouldn't care about Spring Training and I normally don't, but I watched a very little bit of the Brewers and the Rockies just piss pounded us. We didn't play our stars and whatever else, but it was the Colorado Rockies and they completely suck. Ryan Spilbourghs was a Mallard, which is great, but there is not a lot of former Mallards rocking MLB jerseys these days (Sorry HP).
Brewers couldn't muster a run against a team that trots out Ubaldo Jimenez, a guy with a 10.40 ERA heading into the game. It doesn't help that the older guys the Brewers signed apparently found that eating Twinkies and drinking beer is a lot more enjoyable than doing any physical activity during the offseason (the microscope is on you Hoffman and Looper.) Muscle strains? I realize you're 48 years old, but fucking stretch or something.
Gallardo looked respectable enough in relief, but nothing flowerly became of it. There are WAY too many things that have to go right for the Brewers to make a run at it again. I became a fair weather fan the last few years and now legitimately go with the Brewers, but I'm not feeling to great about this year. The division is getting a lot better, though I appreciate the Pirates effort to continue to suck with such devotion. Somebody remind me of the last free agent who willingly went to the Pirates? Andy Van Slyke probably cries himself to sleep some nights.
Bottom line in my senseless rambling, Brewers aren't making the playoffs, or coming close this year. Our lineup has a chance to improve because of younger players getting better, Hart is a HUGE bright spot this Spring, but our staff is all question marks. Does anyone else think having Dave Bush starting the year as your #2 is unsettling? His beard game is strong, but he really isn't a 2 starter, not now, not ever. The bullpen is unproven and without Hoffman to start the year, throwing McClung (who is serviceable) and Villanueva as closers. Zero experience and that means our middle relief is further depleted. Is it too late to scour the California Penal leagues for Ricky Vaughn dopplegangers?
I doubt the lineup has improved as much to cut down on the insane amount of strikeouts and replace them with quality AB's. I don't see Rickie Weeks raising his .342 OBP (I fucking looked it up, calm down.) and becoming a respectable leadoff hitter. Bill Hall will not be a decent hitter, nor will Jason Kendall. Rivera is not a realistic bright spot despite decent numbers last year, he's 32 and never really stuck around in the bigs, this isn't Angels in the Outfield, he's donzo.
SOLUTION: Signing Kenny Powers to shore up the bullpen and bring swagger. You're fucking OUT!
Editors Note: See Eastbound and Down, it's pretty funny. If you don't have HBO you can ask me nicely to come over and enjoy.
Boller, I know you mentioned that the Brewers did not play many of their starters against the Rockies and that is a fact. No one plays takes their starters down to Tucson. The Dbacks have the same problem.
ReplyDeleteThe fact is that both the Dbacks and the Rockies are trying to get out of their contracts with the stadiums and the city of Tucson. No team sends thier big name players down to Tucson and most of them wouldnt go even if the team wanted them to.
Your view of Spring Training is very scewed due to the fact that you watched a game played in Tucson witch most people do not watch and teams just are not the same.
I feel bad that you did not get a good veiw of what this awesome tradition is all about, but don't judge. You didnt even leave the state of Wisconsin.
Hey comment poster, which witch is right? Seriously?
